Start With the Exterior
Before you even open the door, walk around the entire vehicle slowly. You're looking for a few specific things:
Paint and Body Panels
Uneven paint, mismatched color, or wavy body lines can be signs of past accident damage or a hasty repair job. In Central California's intense sun, paint fades unevenly when panels have been repainted. Look at the car from different angles and in good lighting.
Rust and Corrosion
Check the wheel wells, door edges, and underneath the rocker panels. While Central California doesn't deal with road salt like northern states do, older vehicles can still develop rust, especially if they've ever been near the coast.
Panel Gaps
Run your eye along the gaps between the hood, doors, and trunk. If the spacing looks uneven, the car may have been in a collision.
Glass and Lights
Check all windows for chips or cracks. Look at the headlights and taillights for moisture or fogging inside the housing — that's a sign of a failing seal.
Pop the Hood
You don't have to be a mechanic to do a quick engine check. Here's what to look for:
Oil Condition
Pull the dipstick, wipe it clean, dip it again, and check the level and color. Dark, gritty oil or an oil level that's too low could signal poor maintenance habits.
Coolant Reservoir

Belts and Hoses

Fluid Leaks

Electronics and Controls

Warning Lights
